FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What if I miss a class? Can I make it up?

If a vacancy exists in another class you are welcome to make up your missed class. However vacancies are limited so if there is none available, you forfeit the class. TIOI offers one day/evening during each school holidays to make up classes. Again, it is a ‘first in first served’ basis. If classes have not been used by the end of each term, they cannot be carried over to the next term.

Can I bring my own sewing machine/overlocker?

Sewing machines are provided so there is no need to bring your own. However, if you wish to learn how to thread up or use your own machine, you are welcome to bring it along.

Do I have to make clothes for myself?

No. You can make clothes for anyone you wish. It is suggested you learn to take measurements accurately on your first lesson and then take your desired models measurements. We can then proceed with whatever you desire to make.

Can I use commercial patterns?

You can use commercial patterns, although it is not recommended. When using commercial patterns, you are working backwards from someone else’s concept of what your measurements should be. It is possible to do and can be done with success with simple patterns but not recommended for anything that requires accurate fit.

My son/daughter wants to learn sewing. How old do they have to be to enrol?

Age 8 is the minimum age.
